Early research topics (which continue to interest me!) General linguistics, syntax, the interplay between word order and intonation, classification of English adverbials and their position/intonation; information structure; prosody (especially in EFL); impact of “tone deafness” on learning intonation. Research topics since the 1980s Terminology and terminography (with a focus on (a) medical
terminology and (b) the terminology of communication); terminology
management systems; electronic dictionaries design; terminology recognition; translation
memory; CAT systems; new translation tools; implementation of machine
translation and AI. PhD research that I have supervised - Lieve Macken’s research on subsentential alignment (PhD defended 2010) - Klaar Vanopstal’s research on “biomedical information retrieval: bridging the language barrier” (PhD defended in 2013).
