Nadja Contzen - From Insight to Action: Navigating Challenges in Bridging Psychological Research and Climate Policy

Climate mitigation and adaptation require swift and stringent policies. However, successful implementation depends on public acceptance and often involves changes in behaviours and routines. Psychology can contribute critical insights into both policy acceptance and behaviour change. Yet, the integration of psychological insights into policymaking remains limited. This talk will reflect on bridging research and policy, focusing on common barriers such as structural and systemic challenges, and discuss potential ways forward to enhance collaboration and impact.

Pieter Raymaekers - The effectiveness and legitimacy of behavioral public policy in climate governance

Behaviorally informed policy tools, such as nudges, are increasingly used to encourage sustainable behavior and strengthen climate resilience. This talk examines how insights and instruments from the field of Behavioral Public Policy are integrated into broader climate strategies, drawing on empirical research from domains such as climate-adaptive gardening and sustainable food choices. Particular attention is given to issues of effectiveness, legitimacy and transparency. Behavioral approaches are considered within the broader agenda of evidence-informed policymaking.

Hans Bruyninckx - Systems science and the rebuttal of "it will be OK" messaging based on fragmented knowledge production and myopic academic cherry picking.

The increasingly well understood interconnections between Earth systems and social systems is producing sobering scientific evidence regarding the implicit assumption behind adaptation and resilience thinking, namely that we can build stable societies on unstable earth systems. A better understanding of systems science is essential to counter the fragmented and myopic approaches that lead to conclusions that are unrealistic, unhelpful and undermine the sense of urgency that should be driving radical transitional change.

13:00
Marion Dupoux - Unlocking the full potential of behavioural insights for policy

This report examines the transformative role of behavioural insights (BI) in EU policymaking, advocating for integrating BI early in the policy cycle to enhance policy effectiveness. It challenges the misconception that BI is limited to designing behavioural interventions with marginal impacts and demonstrates its potential to guide the development of both traditional policy instruments and behavioural interventions. The report underscores the importance of BI in identifying synergies and conflicts between policies across different areas, thereby improving policy coherence. It advocates for the use of BI in combination with systems analysis to achieve systemic changes. The policy relevance of this work lies in its timely contribution to evidence-based approaches, particularly in areas where the human dimension is key to policy success.
