ITINERARY

Note: We encountered quite some rainfall on this trip. Hence it took some longer in some areas to see a good amount of our target species, add to that the fact that for some of us this was the first trip to Southern America. On top of that we had a cancelled flight in Bahia Solano. Hence we needed to skip Clarito Botero. Our initial plan to include the Giles Fuertes's Parrot reserve was not possible due to security issues. The ProAves reserve has been closed for a while.

PRACTICALITIES

Transport

Most of the time we used public transport to get around. It was often very easy and fairly cheap. Most cities have well organized bus terminals with a variety of companies offering more costly luxury buses to very basic 'trucks' (chivas). Taxis were also frequently used. They were fairly cheap as well, except in more touristic areas

KL and GB took a national flight from Bogota to Santa Marta to save time. There are plenty of comfortable night buses available too. We all took flights back and forth to Mitu and Bahia Solano as there are no decent connecting roads.

Accommodation

Tourism in Colombia is booming. There seem to pop up more and more resorts, hotels and hostels. In larger cities good options for economically prized accommodation are available. In most ProAves reserves it is advised to stay in their lodges as these are the most conveniently located. Unfortunately they are rather expensive, with no cheaper rooms/dorms available.

Money

ATM's were easy to find throughout the country. Only in the very touristic regions it was necessary to bargain, and mostly only for typical souvenirs etc. In El Valle (near Utria) there was no ATM at the time of our visit - the nearest was said to be in Bahia Solano.

Weather

The North was pleasantly warm and dry. We were rather late in the season so we regularly encountered some showers, clouds and mist in the Andes part. We lost several days of birding due to pouring rain, mainly in Mitu. Higher up the mountains (e.g. Nevada del Ruiz) it could be pretty cold in the morning.

Health and safety

We encountered no health problems. Travelling independently caused no safety problems at all. Unfortunately WC's backpack was stolen in the Bogota bus terminal! In general Colombian people are very friendly and helpful.

VISITED SITES

Below is a list of the sites we birded. We mainly used the recent site guide Bird watching in Colombia by Beckers & Florez; it contains useful information on the birding sites, and both accommodation and directions (incl. public transport). To gather additional information www.cloudbirders.com was consulted for bird trip reports. Especially the reports of Burne (2013), De Temmerman (2012), Baruah (2012), Lambert (2007) and Athanas (2011) were very useful!

Mitu

Amazonian Colombia is far less accessible than in other countries. The area near the town of Mitu offers some decent birding, especially for white sand specialists. Unlike some well-known Ecuadorian or Peruvian lodges, the birding isn't done in fantastic and pristine forest. There has been quite some logging in hunting in the past...

The area is populated by tens of local indigenous groups. Access to their land is restricted and a sensitive issue. Therefore it is highly advised to go birding in company of local guides. We contacted Pablo Florez on beforehand to help us sorting out local transportation and guiding. It worked out quite well but not completely hassle free. In Urania for example we didn't have a local guide and hence were chased away by local people when we were hiking around. We met Jorge from Etno AVes Vaupés. This organization combines tourism nicely with respect for the native people. For the independent birder they can organise nice packages and is probably the easiest way to bird the Mitu area. They make use of the same local bird guides us and birding companies!

Upon arrival we had some military/police checks at the airport - they registered us, took pictures, etc - but we didn't have any other hassle later on.

To travel around we used the services of Wilson (phn: 312-3641559, 4WD) for Ceima Cachiveira and Publo Nuevo and for all other parts Vicence (phn: 312-3738717, regular truck).

About everything in Mitu is imported by air planes or ships. The prices are fairly high for this reason, especially transport! Adding that you need to pay a substantial entrance fee to the communities and the same for a local guide, the total price per day is rather high - still less than luxurious lodges though.

Urania
About 15 min driving from Mitu, the surroundings of the indigenous village of Urania offer the closest birding opportunities. The main road passes some pastures and scrub. The road ends at a bridge (1.271027,-70.202477) at the edge of the village. The last 300m stretch before the bridge has some decent forest alongside the road. We also explored the woodland along the river. We tried to bird on the grounds of the village but were rapidly chased away as we were not accompanied by a local guide.

Mitu Cachiveira
This area holds good numbers of the white sand specialities. We had a regular car that dropped us there in the morning and picked us up in the evening - it's only 15 min driving. At the bridge of the 2 de Octubre village (1.231857,-70.234644), where the road ends, we met our local guide Miguel who is the best guide around and really knows the birds and where to find them. From here we both explored the Mitu Cachiveira trails and the so called "Pipeline trail. Just before hitting the river at 1.214813,-70.235231 we also took an overgrown short cut to the Pipeline trail passing some varzea forest. At the edge of the indigenous village near the start of the trail a stand of Mauritia palms (1.227245,-70.237691) held the palmcreeper.

Ceima Cachiveira
About halfway on the way towards Pueblo Nuevo we took a side road towards the indigenous village Ceima Cachiveira (1.223865,-70.162938). Our local guide Jaime had basic bird knowledge and showed us around the area through pastures, scrub and some smaller forest fragments. There is a Cock-of-the-rock lek at 1.221683,-70.151228. We had a very nice mixed species flock close to a bridge in one of the fragments 1.22512,-70.146574).

Pueblo Nuevo
On the way towards the hydro electrical power plant (MCH) we had some good birding near the indigenous village of Pueblo Nuevo. A few hundred meters past the village there are trails on both side of the main road (1.131804,-70.119007). We had two different local guides: Florencio and Agripino. Both had only basic bird knowledge.

There are plenty of other sites which have not been covered by us, for e.g. the vicinity of the hydro plant (MCH), the Garafa trails, the Macaquina trails (on the side of Rio Vaupes), etc. In the future the roads will improve in condition and grow in numbers. Other interesting sites will also be found using the river system.

Highlights: Chestnut-crested Antbird (2 along the Pueblo Nuevo trals @ 1.116436,-70.130417), Gray-bellied Antbird (1 cooperative bird in Mitu Cachiveira @ 1.221549,-70.234753), Bar-bellied Woodcreeper (1 near the Bocatoma trail @ 1.21066,-70.232205), Orinoco Piculet (several seen at Ceima Cachiveira and 1 at Pueblo Nuevo), Tawny-tufted Toucanet (1 heard along the Pueblo Nuevo trail), Purple-breasted Cotinga (1 male perched high up at the first clearing along at Mitu Cachiveira @ 1.220044,-70.234361), Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin (1 at Mitu Cachiveira @ 1.208713,-70.236308), Azure-naped Jay (we encountered small groups at Ceima Cachiveira @ 1.223391,-70.156116 and 1.221582,-70.154844), Blackish-gray Antshrike (1 near the Mitu Cachiveira bridge @ 1.229752,-70.237163), Fiery Topaz (1 male in a flowering tree between the Mitu Cachiveira trail and the Bocatoma trail @ 1.213935,-70.232917), Yellow-crowned Manakin (1 at Mitu Cachiveira @ 1.218056,-70.234464), Black Bushbird (2 times 2 near Mitu Cachivira and Bocatoma @ 1.230052,-70.232854 and 1.206013,-70.231223), Plumbeous Euphonia (a pair seen and 1 more heard along the Bocatoma trail @ 1.209399,-70.231111), Ringed Antpipit (1 at Mitu Cachiveira @ 1.222215,-70.234854), Collared Gnatwren (1 seen and another heard at Mitu Cachivira @ 1.221678,-70.234612), Gray-legged Tinamou (a few were heard on the Pueblo Nuevo trails but none came close enough...)

RNA Reinita Cielo Azul

This ProAves lodge is surrounded by plantations and pastures. The latter are partly planted to restore the former forest. From Bucaramanga we took a bus to San Vncente de Chuchuri where we were able to find a 4WD to take us up to the lodge (6.861366,-73.384137).

To fully bird the area, one should bird the lodge grounds, the Lengueke Trail up and down towards the village. Early morning birding next to the lodge can be rewarding as well as checking the hummingbird feeders.

To get to the reserve itself, follow the Lengueke trail uphill. You go down from the lodge and keep right at the junction. The start of the trail is at a small gate and small sign at 6.863067, -73.38421. About halfway up the trail before reaching the forest Recurve-billed Bushbird is present in the very dense scrub (6.864121,-73.380607).

Once the path follows the forest edge (app. 30' walk) look for a small gate in the fence at your left hand side (6.853233,-73.381036) just before the 2nd orange gate. Follow the small path through the forest which leads you to the Wood-quail feeder (6.853977,-73.380144). The wood-quails apparently visit the feeder all moments of the day, we had a pair in late afternoon.

The main birding is done along the Lengueke trail inside the reserve. Near the second bench (6.846722,-73.375192) we encountered interesting mixed flocks on several occasions. At the 5th bench, near the end of the reserve, you have a nice view over two valleys. The grackles can be found from this point (6.849029,-73.365509) and more uphill.

Other targets are located further down. We walked along the main road a few km down and back up. On the sidetrack to the right there are feeders in the middle of the plantations/pastures (6.871187,-73.382075) where the Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird is often encountered. About halfway down the main road towards San Vincente there is a stakeout for Yellow-browed Shrike-Vireo in the coffee plantations at (6.870316,-73.396015). Just outside the village of San Vincente we made a brief stop for the Double-banded Graytail (6.872810,-73.399436).

Highlights: Black Inca (daily good numbers, mainly in the reserve), Indigo-capped Hummingbird (daily small numbers, easily seen at feeders), Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird (1 bird at the feeders below the lodge @ 6.871187,-73.382075), Gorgeted Wood-Quail (several times heard in the reserve and a pair seen at the feeders - gps see above), Upper Magdalena Tapaculo (only one time taped in @ 6.846037,-73.374966 but more heard), Long-tailed Tapaculo (2 birds seen and more heard in the reserve), Yellow-throated Spadebill (1 bird near the 2nd beanch @ 6.845757,-73.374746), Mountain Grackle (2 birds near the 5th bench @ 6.849029,-73.365509), Niceforo's Wren (both below the lodge - a pair seen @ 6.857844,-73.390807 and another pair heard @ 6.861947,-73.38641), Turquoise Dacnis (in total 5+ seen, the easiest in the higher trees right behind the lodge @ 6.860974,-73.384232), Recurve-billed Bushbird (1 distantly calling bird in very dense tangles didn't want to come close enough, gps see above), Colombian Chachalaca (easily heard, a few seen), Parker's Antbird (5+ seen and often heard within the reserve), Rufous-browed Tyrannulet (2 single birds encountered), Rufous-naped Greenlet (daily small numbers), ...

RNA El Paujil

This ProAves reserve is named after the Blue-billed Curassow as El Paujil is probably the easiest place to see this speciality - it is one of the closest reserves to Bogota. As we came from Reinita Cielo Azul, we took a bus from Barancabermeja to Puerto Buyaca and another bus (more a truck) to Puerto Pinzon. From there we were collected by a 4WD arranged by the rangers. The turnoff (left) to the reserve is at 6.05335,-74.26759.

The best trail for the curassows proved to be the one on the other side of the river. When the water level is low, one can cross it on foot (waist deep), but the ranger can also drop you and pick you up when you whistle hard enough. The trail can be somewhat slippery when it's raining and after a short flat part it goes steep up to a ridge.

Near the lodge there are hummingbird feeders and a couple of hundred meters along the entrance road there is another set of feeders at a hilltop 6.050433,-74.263873). The nearby marshy area (6.050749,-74.263332) holds some crakes. From the lodge one can follow a trail in both directions along the river. The left trail is a short one and meets the entrance road not too far from the marshy area. The right is longer and depending which fork you follow hits the entrance road or the main road.

We also birded the entrance road and the main road to the left (away from Puerto Pinzon).

The general area Puerto Buyaca - Puerto Pinzon is good for screamers - keep an eye open when travelling. We encountered several birds in de meadows and perched high up dead trees.

Highlights: Blue-billed Curassow (daily encounters with singles or pairs, mostly along the trail across the river, for e.g. @ 6.045154,-74.260591 but a presumably tame bird also came to feed next to the aviaries), Black Antshrike (a pair seen close to the lodge @ 6.05191,-74.262327 and another heard), Beautiful Woodpecker (1 seen on the ridge along the trail across the river and another seen along the entrance road), Black-billed Flycatcher (a nice pair @ 6.046874,-74.26272), White-mantled Barbet (2 single bird seen), Rufous Piha (1 bird along the main road), Sooty Ant-Tanager (a pair along the trail across the river), White-throated Crake (a pair came in very close at the marshy area, gps see above), ...

La Romera

This area is almost within the city limits of Medellin and therefore one of the easiest places to see some specialities. On our previous trip we were too limited in time and missed on the Yellow-headed manakin. This time we took a taxi from our hostel straight to La Romera as we knew the directions. Note that not all taxi drivers know the place. We birded along the main road near the entrance gate (6.12681,-75.601038).

Highlights: Yellow-headed Manakin (1 male not too far from the entrance gate @ 6.127855,-75.599962), Red-bellied Grackle (noisy flocks up to 10 birds were easily encountered), Stiles's Tapaculo (we taped 1 one bird and heard another),...

Utria NP

At this moment the area near Bahia Solano and El Valle (and the nearby Utria NP) is probably one of the better and safer places to find a good amount of Choco specialities in Colombia. Like most birders we went there for some Choco birding, but in the future there will be definitely some other reliable sites. As there is no road to Bahia Solano, we took a Satena flight from Medellin and back.

From the airport we headed south to the small coastal village EL Valle where we were based. We contacted a local young guide Balmes on beforehand to show us around. Bahia Solano - El Valle road
One of the more productive areas to bird proved to be the main road between Bahia Solano and El Valle - the traffic is not too heavy. Our favourite spot to start birding was near the large clearing at 6.145255,-77.401819. We had ourselves dropped off there and birded the way back to El Valle, although only the first kilometres are rewarding. We had decent tanager flocks and also good numbers of hummingbirds.

Utria National Park
The easiest way to reach the official park is by motorboat, albeit expensive. We went back and forth on the same day, but inside the park there is accommodation as well. We suffered from the heavy rain so we concentrated the little birding time we had close to the cabins (6.017556,-77.348986) and on the other side of the bay along the Cocalito trail (6.020752,-77.354575).

Sendero El Valle - Utria
This is a broad, easy but long trail towards the national park. Starting just after crossing the bridge over the El Valle River (6.100806,-77.423783), the first stretch goes through pastures and degraded forest and later on through secondary forest. Near the end of the trail the park itself starts at a bridge (6.055479,-77.370889). From there the forest is somewhat wetter and the trail goes up before descending again towards the bay of the NP (about 10 km).

Tundo trail
This trail follows the Rio Tundo, a side river of the Rio Valle. It starts about 1.5 km along the main road towards Bahia Solano at (6.113942,-77.424275). We only followed it not too far. There were plenty of flowering stands of Heliconia which are always good for hummingbirds. Unfortunately hunters also frequent this trail...

Caimaneira Creek
With a motorized canoe it is possible to go upstream the Rio El Valle and enter the side rivers Rio Caimaneira (6.112619,-77.400208) and Rio Borohoro (6.110875,-77.384481). We wandered around along some logging trails but were not very impressed by the birding there.

Highlights: Baudo Oropendola (a nice group of 7 birds along Sendero El Valle - Utria @ 6.079626,-77.394504 and 2 heard @ 6.067478,-77.381251), Brown Wood-Rail (a pair taped in in the mangroves of the Utria NP @ 6.01548,-77.348877 and another bird heard calling along the Caimaneiro Creek), Dusky Pigeon (regularly heard and seen in the entire area), Sapphire-throated Hummingbird (2 single birds along the main road Bahia Solano - El Valle), Black-breasted Puffbird (1 bird seen on the way to Utria NP @ 6.058851,-77.374597 and another along the Tundo Trail), Spot-crowned Barbet (3 birds seen along the main road to Bahia Solano and another along the Caimaneira Creek), Sapayoa (1 bird in the dense forest along the Cocalito Trail of the Utria NP @ 6.020528,-77.357457), Rose-faced Parrot (1 seen along the Sendero El Valle - Utria and 3 seen along the main road to Bahia Solano), Spotted Antbird (only 1 bird encountered along the Sendero El Valle - Utria @ 6.08202,-77.39635), Streak-chested Antpitta (1 bird seen and another heard along the Sendero El Valle - Utria @ 6.079275,-77.393781), Thicket Antpitta (several heard, mainly in the scrub along the main road to Bahia Solano), Rufous Mourner (2 birds in the wet forest at the end of the Sendero El Valle - Utria), Black-tipped Cotinga (several encounters, mainly of single birds, in the entire area), Stripe-throated Wren (1 bird seen along the Cocalito Trail inside the Utria NP @ 6.020527,-77.358318 and another heard along the main road towards Bahia Solano),Golden-collared Manakin (commonly heard and seen), Tawny-faced Gnatwren (2 along the Sendero El Valle - Utria @ 6.078201,-77.392778 and 2 along the Rio Tundo trail @ 6.118941,-77.427856), Rufous-winged Tanager (2 birds in a mixed species flock near the large clearing along the main road to Bahia Solano - gps see above), Blue-whiskered Tanager (at least 3 birds in the same flock as the previous species), Scarlet-thighed Dacnis (almost daily small numbers seen), Lemon-spectacled Tanager (at least 2 birds seen in the forest patch at the end of the Sendero El Valle - Utria @ 6.054265,-77.368591), Spot-crowned Antvireo (1 bird in the forest patch at the end of the Sendero El Valle - Utria @ 6.055067,-77.366366), Gray-and-gold Tanager (2 birds along the main road to Bahia Solano @ 6.135492,-77.405176), Scarlet-and-white Tanager (2 birds along the main road to Bahia Solano), Magdalena Antbird (1 bird along the Rio Tundo trail @ 6.117981,-77.426963), White-tipped Sicklebill (1 bird feeding on the numerous Heliconia flowers @ 6.117889,-77.426788), Choco Tinamou (one bird was clearly heard but stayed out of sight along the main road to Bahia Solano ), ...

Rio Blanco

The Rio Blanco Reserve is protected as it serves as a watershed for Manizales. It is maintained by Fundegar. The reserve is one of Colombia's birding hot spots and particularly famous for its excellent antpitta feeders. We took a taxi in Manizales to get us to the reserve. The main turnoff in Manizales is at 5.058611,-75.48333. Early morning the main gate (5.065963,-75.448306) can be closed, but there is always someone around - just ring the bell - and continue to the lodge (5.073394,-75.43805).

We spend one night in the reserve cabins (for owling) and also on day visit. The reserve manager Albeiro and his wife Selene can be contacted on beforehand (phn: 320-7397113, 314-2008472, 036-8703810, mail: albeiroamphita@hotmail.com). If he's busy guiding other groups, his kids can also guide you around.

The birding is very straightforward: there are plenty of feeders (antpittas & hummingbirds) nearby and otherwise birding along the main tracks is very rewarding!

Highlights: Bicolored Antpitta (a few heard and 1 seen at a feeder @ 5.074819,-75.43612), Brown-banded Antpitta (daily small numbers seen and more heard, all over the area), Chestnut-naped Antpitta (1 bird taped in at a bamboo patch, 3 birds were heard in the reserve, none came to the feeders), Golden-plumed Parakeet (a flock of 30+ birds near the lodge), Masked Saltator (1 bird on the first day and 2 birds on the second day, both next to the lodge), Rufous-banded Owl (1 bird taped in near the lodge), White-throated Screech-Owl (daily heard near the lodge), Dusky Piha (a single bird), ...

Los Nevados NP

Nevada del Ruiz is part of the Los Nevados NP. It is an excellent day trip from Manizales if you have private transportation. Pablo helped us contacting a driver (Hector, phn: 317-5223708). With his small family car we managed to make the full circuit: going up fast along the new road (towards Honda/Bogota) and descending by taking the old dirt track. At some points we were very happy that the car was able to pass - a 4WD is a more secure option.

We first stopped in a nice paramo area with plenty of flowers where we tracked down some hummingbirds (4.996433,-75.330177). Higher up on we had a brief scan at Laguna Negra (4.980327,-75.335352) and the nearby Mirador with the parakeets (4.97134,-75.343924). We continued all the way up to the Las Brisas station (4.933643,-75.349976) where we strolled around looking for helmetcrest.

On the way down we took the old road/jeep track - the turnoff is at 4.968675,-75.351642. A bit below the Hotel Termales (being renovated, 4.97181,-75.385351 ) we checked some hummingbird feeders (4.972418,-75.383357) and birded along the road in that general area. Just before the lower entrance (4.995559,-75.420563) we tried to find any responding Crescent-faced Antpitta on the same spot where WC saw one in the past (4.996612,-75.416787), but were washed away for the rest of the day...

Highlights: Black-thighed Puffleg (5+ @ 4.996433,-75.330177), Golden-breasted Puffleg (5+, same spot as previous), Rainbow-bearded Thornbill (1 bird, same spot as previous), Bearded Helmetcrest (2 birds along the trails near Las Brisas, gps see above), Rufous-fronted Parakeet (a nice flock of 30+ birds at the Mirador, gps see above), Paramo Tapaculo (1 taped in and more heard), Bicolored Antpitta (2 heard along the old road), Golden-crowned Tanager (2 birds along the old road), Chestnut-naped Antpitta (1 bird heard), Black-headed Hemispingus (2 birds along the old road), Black-backed Bush Tanager (small numbers seen, mainly at the first stop), ...

Otun-Quimbaya

The Otun-Quimbaya Park is well equiped for hosting large groups, probably mainly school kids. The reserve used to be an old plantation of exotic trees but has some good birding to offer!

We left Rio Blanco around midday by bus and were late afternoon in Otun. Thanks to Albeiro from Rio Blanco (see above) we got in contact with a driver for the reserve: Mario 311-3808126, Gladys 314-6426691, Ilona 314-6304994. The latter picked us up at the bus station of Pereira. There are chivas as well but they don't run too frequently and are very slow.

The birding starts right at the HQ and cabanas (4.729,-75.577848). From there we mainly explored the 6 km long gravel road which ends at a tienda 'El Cedral' (4.70395,-75.537422). The Sendero los Bejucos starts at 4.72828,-75.577014.

Highlights: Cauca Guan (daily seen in good numbers, in the morning and evening they were very tame and often perched high up in the trees along the dirt track), Colombian Screech-Owl (1 bird taped in a couple of hundred meters along the gravel road towards the reserve), Multicolored Tanager (a few birds observed in mixed species flocks), Gray-headed Dove (a pair), Golden-plumed Parakeet (on two days a large flock was seen along the gravel road), Moustached Antpitta (several heard and one seen along the gravel road @ 4.72319,-75.567147), Chestnut Wood-Quail (daily seen and heard), Streak-capped Treehunter (1 bird heard), Crested Ant-Tanager (two times 2 birds), Torrent Duck (en route to Otun-Quimbaya we haad a nice pair perched on rock in the Rio Otun @ 4.778921,-75.643754). We tried very hard to find a Hooded Antpitta which has recently been seen in the area but had no luck...

Bioandina

We followed the advice of Pablo to visit Bioandina area instead of Onzago Road (Soata). Bioandina is a private reserve set up for releasing captive animals and is said to look like a zoo. We contacted a private driver called Florismo (phn: 310-8154815) and used his services for a full birding day starting from Bogota.

Just above Guasco the main road passes through some nice paramo and we had a first next to a house named La Huitaca (4.846047,-73.824594) where we mainly concentrated on hummingbirds.

We continued for about 18km and took right at 4.830413,-73.765942. All along the road to Bioandina we had several birding stops until we hit the gate (4.778318,-73.776761). About 1 km below the gate we found a house with feeders which are filled by local researchers/birders and is a good spot for the starfrontlet (4.789056,-73.776632).

Highlights: Blue-throated Starfrontlet (3 birds, the best at the feeders just below Bioandina, gps see above), Coppery-bellied Puffleg (3 birds close to La Huitaca @ 4.843948,-73.826094), Bronze-tailed Thornbill (5+ seen, mainly near La Huitaca, gps see above), Brown-breasted Parakeet (a nice flock of 6 birds perched in the dead trees below Bioandina @ 4.806645,-73.782556), Pale-bellied Tapaculo (several seen and more heard), Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (4 birds, mainly near La Huitaca, gps see above), Ochre-breasted Brush-Finch (1 bird was a nice surprise in the bamboo patches along the river @ 4.824736,-73.76809), Black-headed Hemispingus (2 birds), ...

Siecha marshes

On the way back from Bioandina we briefly visited the area near Guasca. The area holds similar species to Parque La Florida within city limits of Bogota. The turnoff from the main road back towards Bogota is at 4.847642,-73.912206.
