Het is een vaak voorkomend gegeven dat origami artiesten de waarde van een model afmeten aan de complexiteit. Meestal wordt met complexer bedoeld technisch ingewikkelder om te vouwen (meer flappen, meer ingewikkelde vouwen). Maar is complexer ook altijd beter? Heeft een complex model een grotere artistieke waarde dan een minder complex model? Naar mijn mening is de technische bagage van de artiest zijn gereedschap; het mag niet zijn doel zijn. Wat ik meer en meer mis in origami, is het hart van de artiest. Waar is de boodschap? Waar is de emotie? Goeie origami zou moeten gemaakt worden met het verstand en gevouwen met het hart.

 

It’s common practice in origami to score the value of a model according to its complexity. Mostly, what is meant by more complex is harder to fold from a technical point of view (more flaps, more complicated folds). The question is: is more complex also better? Does a more complex model have a higher artistic value than a less complex model? In my view, the technical skills of an artist are his tools; they should not be his goal. What I miss more and more in origami is the heart of the artists. Where is the message? Where is the emotion? Good origami should be designed with the brain and folded with the heart.
