The initial setup for our itinerary looked quite different and had to be changed several times during our stay. |

The first and probably the worst change was Mount Katanglad (Mindanao). Due to heavy heavy clashes between the military army and the NPA we were not allowed to enter the area. Tim Fisher proposed to choose Mount Apo as an alternative. Allthough we did see a few good birds, we missed too many species which are supposed to be guaranteed on Katanglad. Since there are only few and unused overgrown trails, the area lacks certain habitats (at least which are reachable) and some species, like McGregors Cuckooshrike and Bukidnon Woodcock, are just absent on Mount Apo, we found it everything but a good substitute for Katanglad. Birding was even unpleasant at some times.

The recent downpours which came along with the severe typhones just before our arrival caused some grave landslides. Canaway Forest (Negros) could not be reached properly so our guide suggested to go to the nearby Landay Forest. Actually Landay is just a part of the same forest complex as Canaway. Hence most of the birds were the same. We did not really miss any gettable species, but in our opinion Canaway might be better for Negros Bleeding-heart and Negros Jungle-Flycatcher because of the lack of suitable forest in lower altitudes. On the other hand, we did see Flame-templed Babbler and Negros Striped-Babbler which are hardly seen in Canaway.

Mount Halcon was the only place where we suffered realy bad weather. It had been raining daily for 3 weeks preceeding our visit and it did not get any better. Very low visibility, continous drizzle and regular driving rain, steep and muddy trails, countless numbers of leeches and soaked tent, clothes and backpacks made us decide to spend only one night on the mountain. The last day of our planned stay was swapped for an extra day Makiling.

Apaya and Ambabok were out of bussiness for the same reason as Katanglad. We planned to spend 3 days in that area in search for the newly rediscovered Isabela Oriole and some good lowland species. Tim Fisher therefore came up with an alternative lowland forest called Sitio Puerta. There was some good primary forest left but unfortunately out of reach in a three day stay. We ended up birding on a few steep and overgrown trails through an area which had been recently logged. The bamboo cutting was still going on. As expected no trace of the orioles, but we were delighted to find several White-fronted Tits and a party of the sought-after Green-faced Parrotfinches. Our third day was swapped for an extra day on Mount Polis.

19/12/2004 - Mount Makiling (Luzon) - 1 bird was flushed and perched for a few seconds on the first crash barriers allowing frustrating views before it disappeared. 2 times a thrush was flushed and seen poorly in flight, one just before the first crash barriers and one around the third set of crash barriers.
07/01/2005 - Mount Makiling (Luzon) - One bird seen foraging and than flushed early morning just below the first crash barriers along the main track. Possibly the same bird was seen again early afternoon in the same area when it flew into a tree and gave brief but good views. 3 times (the same?) a bird gave prolonged views when it was foraging on a muddy side track just before the food stalls.
