120 years of Olympic Games

The Summer Olympics is the biggest event in the world. It is a peaceful way for countries all around the world to compete in a variety of different sports and to show their strength and superiority. The first edition of the modern Olympics took place about 120 years ago in 1896. Since then 28 Olympic Summer Games have been hosted. The achievement of all the participating athletes were carefully recorded and are publicly available.

In 2018 Randi H. Griffin scrapped all data on the Games from Athens 1896 to Rio 2016 from a public website. The resulting dataset consists of records with information about the performances of about 130,000 athletes. We've taken the resulting historical dataset to present the Olympics and its history through the power of data visualisation.

With the visualisations we made we wanted to show four interesting aspects about the Olympics. You can discover these aspects on the different pages:

  • On the explore page you can explore the performances of all the countries that participated in the Olympics using an intuitive world map.
  • The evolution page shows the different ways in which the Olympics have evolved in it's 120 year history.
  • The various advantages athletes have over each other is visualised on the advantages page.
  • The crisis page demonstrates how the Olympics are affected by worldwide crises.
