The Burkholderia cepacia complex experimental strain panel

Updated on 5 September 2008

During the meeting of the IBCWG in Victoria, BC, Canada (May 1997) the idea was launched to establish a set of strains of B. cepacia complex based on genomovar diversity and deposit them in an international culture collection. We have good clinical information and typing information for these strains and in some of the strains strong evidence for virulence has been identified in one or more models. These organisms and their relevant clinical, phenotypic and genotypic information will be shared among researchers working on B. cepacia complex. In addition, any DNA libraries or collection of mutants which are constructed from these organisms will be available to all in the group.

A first paper describing reference strains of the first five genomovars was published in February 2000. A second paper describing reference strains for genomovars VI to IX has been published in June 2003.

All strains can be obtained from the BCCM/LMG Bacteria Collection
