A short scientific résumé

Research. Since september 1998 I am active as a researcher (currently as Guest Professor) in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of Ghent University. My research focuses on Soft Computing in Image Processing, and involves topics such as fuzzy mathematical morphology, fuzzy filtering for image noise removal, similarity measures for image comparison, fuzzy logical operators, etc. I have published several journal and conference papers on these topics, and I am co-editor of the books Fuzzy Techniques in Image Processing, Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing, and Soft Computing in Image Processing: Recent Advances. I have also published two books for undergraduate students; the first is a reference book on mathematics, the second is a reference book on chemistry and physics. International conferences are quite important events to spread research results and to make international contacts. Therefore, I have organized several conference sessions, and I have co-organized a full-day workshop at the FUZZ-IEEE'2001 Conference. Furthermore, I was also co-manager of the FLINS 2002, FLINS 2004 and FLINS 2006 Conferences. Recent conference sessions are organized within the framework of the SCIP Working Group, of which I am a co-founder and coordinator. The SCIP Working Group aims at establishing and intensifying international cooperation between researchers that are active in the area of Soft Computing in Image Processing, and already has over 170 members from over 40 countries. Finally, it is worthwhile to mention that I have refereed papers for several international journals and international conferences, symposia or workshops.

Teaching. Since the academic year 2008-2009 I am responsible for the courses Data-Analysis I (first Bachelor Biomedical Sciences), Applied Formal Logic (first Bachelor Computer Science) and Practicum Mathematics (first Bachelor Mathematics). From 2002 until the academic year 2007-2008 I was responsible for the course Mathematics for the first Bachelor of Farmaceutical Sciences. I also gave exercises for the courses Fuzziness and Uncertainty Modelling (Masters Mathematics and Computer Science), Numerical Analysis (Bachelor Computer Science), and Mathematics (first and second Bachelor Economy). During the past years I have guided several students for their Master Thesis, and I am also responsible for the co-guidance of phd students.

Other. From October 2004 until October 2008 I was a member of the Board of Governors of Ghent University, and during a part of that time I was also a member of the Executive Board of Ghent University. In that function, I represented about 2500 young academic personnel members.
