The research of Lars Bernaerts focuses on experimental fiction and methods of textual analysis (narratology, literary stylistics, speech-act theory). In De retoriek van waanzin (The Rhetoric of Madness, 2011), he examined narrative unreliability and rhetorical strategies in 'mad' first-person narration. In his current work, he uses postclassical narratology, cognitive literary studies and speech-act theory to analyse modern experimental fiction (Flemish, Dutch and comparative). Together with Hans Vandevoorde and Bart Vervaeck, he co-founded the Study Center for Experimental Literature (SEL) and he is a co-editor of the SEL book series. He is the president of the Flemish Association of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature (VAL) and the editor of the academic journal Spiegel der Letteren.

Het onderzoek van Lars Bernaerts focust op experimentele literatuur en tekstuele benaderingen van literair proza (narratologie, literaire stilistiek en taalhandelingsanalyse). In De retoriek van waanzin (2011) onderzoekt hij de retoriek en de narratieve onbetrouwbaarheid van waanzinnige ik-vertellers, met aandacht voor de representatie van waanzin en het gebruik van taalhandelingen. In zijn huidige onderzoek concentreert hij zich op de lectuur van experimentele teksten aan de hand van postklassieke narratologie, taalhandelingstheorie en cognitieve literatuurwetenschap. Samen met Hans Vandevoorde en Bart Vervaeck richtte hij het Studiecentrum voor Experimentele Literatuur (SEL) op en is hij redacteur van de SEL-boekenreeks. Hij is de ondervoorzitter van de Vlaamse Vereniging voor Algemene en Vergelijkende Literatuurwetenschap (VAL) en hoofdredacteur van het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Spiegel der Letteren.

2008-2011 Postdoctoral project: Van schuldbewustzijn naar taalbewustzijn. Taalhandelingen en de constructie van bewustzijn in het werk van Ivo Michiels
[Speech Acts and the Construction of Minds in the Work of Ivo Michiels]

Dit project streeft naar een geïntegreerde narratologische aanpak van taalhandelingen en bewustzijnsrepresentatie in experimenteel proza van de Vlaamse auteur Ivo Michiels. De theorie van taalhandelingen wordt geïntegreerd in een cognitief narratologische benadering van bewustzijn(sconstructie) om de werking van Michiels’ experimentele teksten preciezer te kunnen beschrijven. Anderzijds noopt Michiels’ proza tot een kritische evaluatie van postklassieke modellen uit de narratologie.

[This project aims for an integrated narratological approach of speech acts and the representation of consciousness in experimental texts by the Flemish author Ivo Michiels. The theory of speech acts will be integrated in a cognitive narratological framework for the study of conciousness in fiction. On the one hand, the effects of experimental texts can be articulated more precisely this way. On the other hand, Michiels' texts will allow for a critical evaluation of postclassical narratological models.]
