VISITED SITES

Listed below are all birding sites we've visited during this trip. Summarized information is given on the birds and guides.

Muara Angke

We saw an unexpected female Asian Golden Weaver foraging near a small pool. The Sunda Coucal was readily seen from the observation tower (telescope!). One Javan Plover was observed on a small pool at the far end of the marsh. Just follow the main road and take the first through sandy road on your right. Milky Stork was a big miss till we drove from the Jakarta Airport to the city center and we spotted one on a dirty lake along the highway. Yelling hard enough will persuade the taxi driver to stop in the middle of the highway. No kidding!

Guides: none.

Way Kambas

The best bird was definitely the White-winged Duck. We saw 3 and 10 birds at a small pool named Ulung Ulung. We can’t explain where it was but the guides know where they are... The ducks had a high feral appearance, not because of a doubtful origin, but due to inbreeding problems they have a high aberration rate. Although we saw them already the first day, the views we had of them – and of other birds as well – in the morning on the second day were much more enjoyed: Silver-rumped Spinetail, Black-thighed Falconet. Red Junglefowl was also at the very same spot. Malaysian Blue Flycatchers were encountered along the river. Night birds at Way Kambas are renowned but were far from easy. The more common nightjars are fairly easy in the surroundings of the Rhino Centre, the frogmouths and the Bonaparte’s Nightjar were seen at night and in the morning (before dawn) along the main jeep track. We ended up with Bonaparte's Nightjar, Large Frogmouth, a very probable Gould's Frogmouth, Reddish and Collared Scops-Owl for the nocturnal birds. 1 Great Argus ran across the main jeep track once, while Crested Firebacks were much more commonly encountered. Red-naped and Scarlet-rumped Trogons acquired a lot of searching. Our only Wrinkled Hornbills flew by at Way Kambas. We sadly missed the Storm’s Stork in spite of many hours searching. Red-bearded Bee-eaters were encountered a few times along the jeep trail. A Large Hawk-Cuckoo flew and later perched in the trees around Way Kanan. A nice collection of malkohas was seen by us: Black-bellied, Chestnut-bellied, Raffles’s, Red-billed and Chestnut-breasted Malkoha. Nice views of both Scarlet-rumped and Red-naped Trogons were obtained and much enjoyed.

Guides: Unknown (forgot their names), both know hardly something about birds, speak barely English. We hired the 2 guides for 2 days. The guiding is very useful, without them it’s almost impossible to find the spot where we saw the White-winged Ducks, you’ll just get lost. We spent the night in the “jungle” to increase the chances of seeing the ducks. They will tell you that is forbidden and dangerous to walk alone in the forest because of the presence of tigers and (wild) elephants. Although we did walk around by ourselves during day and night time, we encountered absolutely no problems (except for one lousy leech). Contact them at the PHPA office in Way Kanan.

Carita

White-breasted Babbler is the main reason for going to Carita and show fairly easily. Several barbet species were present in the fruiting trees, amongst them were Blue-eared and Black-banded Barbets. A nice and very cooperative Orange-breasted Trogon reacted to our tape at the far end of the trial (in the good forest). Carita also produced our only Banded Kingfisher.

Guides: none.

Pulau Dua

We only went to Pulau Dua to see the Javan White-Eye, in which we succeeded fairly easily. As we reached the mangrove forest we soon had some nice views of this Javan endemic amongst hundreds of Golden-bellied Gerygones and even more annoying mosquito’s! By surprise we found three Javan Plovers on the surrounding saltpans.

Samsul, knows a bit about birds and speaks fluently English. His guidance included transport with a very nice car of his friend. The guiding is far from necessary but it’s easy to have some things (like fast transport) arranged and he knows a shortcut to the mangroves through some saltpans. He’s also a guide for Carita, Ujun Kulon and Krakatau. Contact him at the Sunset Hotel in Carita.

Bogor Botanical Gardens

One of the best birds to see at Bogor is the Javan Hanging-Parrot. Although we enjoyed the restaurant’s viewpoint (and its beverages) one shouldn’t put too much effort in this bird. The parrots proved very hard to find (we only had a glimpse of 1 flying bird), while later on - at the Cibodas Botanical Gardens – we had regular encounters with this Javan endemic. Hill Blue Flycatcher on the other hand was only seen here.

Guides: none.

Gunung Halimun

White-bellied Fantail proved to be fairly easy round the research station of Cikaniki. The Javan Hawk-Eagle was seen easily from the Citalahab village. We also found some non-endemic but nice species as Blue Whistling-Thrush and... We found Brown-backed Needletails only at Gunung Halimun. To our surprise 2 Green-spectacled Pigeons flew by at close range and 1 Dark-backed Imperial-Pigeon after some time searching for it. Along the Loop Trail the Javan Trogons were seen daily in small numbers!

Guides: Sukiman, basic knowledge of birds, speaks little English. Wardi, knows barely his birds, but speaks good English. The guiding is not necessary, but it’s said to be obligatory. After a while you can just ignore the guides and go to the forest yourself. It’s easy to find the way yourself on the trails and you can watch birds at your own tempo. They can easily show you Javan Hawk-Eagle. Contact them at the Cikaniki research station.

Gunung Gede

Javan Cochoa was definitely one of the main birds we searched for, but it took quite a long time till we heard a sound very like that of the Sumatran Cochoa (had a tape from the latter). With the very same sound we lured a female Javan Cochoa into view, somewhere between the fork to the waterfalls and the hot springs. Javan Hawk-Eagle was just a bonus as we already had very nice views of it at Mt Halimun. 1 Bird flew over Blue Lake when birding that area. Just wait at the lake and be as lucky as we were, but probably it's better to try it at Halimun. We found them much easier there. We had 2 brief sightings of a flushed Dusky Woodcock a little bit above the big Rhino Shelter. It was just after dusk, but some people with more luck can find it early morning walking on the trail. At the waterfalls we had several Salvadori’s Nightjars flying around dusk. Tawny-breasted Parrotfinch proved to be easier than expected. Between the Waterfall Junction and the Hot Springs Javan Trogons,… We saw a few birds around the hot springs area feeding on the white flowers along the trail and also 1 a bit lower. Listen for their silent calls. One Banded Woodpecker was seen – out of range? The higher parts were good for: Volcano Swiftlet, Island Thrush and Sunda Bush-Warbler which all were found easily. In order to see the woodcocks and to be at the top of the volcano as early as possible, we spent one night on the mountain. It's a rather long hike if you'd like to do it on one day. We rented a tent from Freddy's son.
In the lower parts we had our only Ruddy and Little Cuckoo-Dove. Pink-headed Fruit-Doves were found easily in fruiting trees. The Yellow-throated Hanging-Parrots were extremely easy in the Botanical Gardens when we were around in contrary to Bogor. With some help of Indra we watched an owl in the gardens, which is believed (or not!) to be Javan Scops-Owl. At the golf course we found a Javan Kingfisher.

Guides: Indra, speaks good English, and knows his birds. He is the son of Freddy of Freddy’s Homestay and is able to show you the supposed Javan Scops Owl. He kept on searching for 4 hours till we saw the owl. Contact him by Freddy at the homestay.

Gunung Bromo

Island Thrush, Sunda Bush-Warbler and Javan Bush-Warbler were found easily, only the latter gave only a few short glimpses when crawling in the short but dense vegetation circles around us.

Guides: none.

Baluran

Red and Green Junglefowl are fairly common throughout the park. Green Peafowl is very easy since they come to drink at a water reservoir around the huts several times a day. In the mangroves we soon found several Great Slaty Woodpeckers and 1 Great-billed Heron. In the forest along the main jeep track we saw another Javan Kingfisher.

Guides: none.

Bali Barat

It took us quite a long time before we could add Black-winged Starling on our life list. It was around the breeding centre (not the release cage) for the mynas that we had good views of a single bird and 2 Black-thighed Falconets as well. A couple of Beach Thick-Knees was present along the beach line on our way to Teluk Telor. You have to go to the myna spot with a motorboat and just scan the sandy beach on your way. Green Junglefowl was seen as well. One Small Buttonquail calmly crossed the road. If you are at the PHPA office in Cecek, check the trees in its surrounding. In a fruiting tree we had a few species easier than elsewhere such as Lineated Barbet. To our surprise we had a Banded Bay Cuckoo in the vicinity of the myna breeding cages.
At a dry river bed we saw our only party of Wreathed Hornbills, Rufous-backed Kingfisher, etc.
In Gilimanuk Bay we just saw some regular birds, our first Sacred Kingfisher and 1 Great-billed Heron.

Guides: Iwan, knows the birds, speaks good English but is expensive. We had to pay to hire a motorboat, a so called donation to the myna breeding program and for the guiding. The second day we had to pay again for the guiding plus the transport by 2 motorcycles. Guiding is not necessary but said to be obligatory. Quite a rip-off in our opinion, but at least he was able to show us the highly wanted Bali Myna and Black-winged Starling. Contact him at the PHPA office in Cecek.

Tangkoko

Phillipine Scrubfowl Purple-winged Roller. Tangkoko is famous for its kingfishers and so it revealed Collared, Sacred, Lilac-marked, Ruddy, Green-backed and the highly wanted Scaly Kingfisher. The latter was found by Untu somewhere high up on the mountain. Both (Yellow-breasted and Golden-mantled) Racquet-tails could be found mostly in the clearings. A Spotted Harrier was a nice surprise. Tabon Scrubfowl was seen regularly, but on no other occasion during this trip. We had no luck finding the Minnahassa Masked Owl, but we did have Ochre-bellied Hawk-Owl and Great Eared- and Sulawesi Nightjar.

Guides: Untu and Freddy, both now the birds very well. Freddy is the senior guide who used to guide all the birdwatchers, but in our opinion Untu is as good as him or maybe even better. Unto also speaks English very well, in contrary to Freddy. They both came along with us for the price of 1 guide. The guiding is advisable because the trails are difficult to find and so is the Scaly Kingfisher. Untu proved to be very good at picking out all the remoteness sitting kingfishers way before we saw them! Contact them at the Mama Roos Homestay in Batih Putih or at untusb2001@yahoo.com.

Labi-Labi

Labi-Labi holds a lot of “parrots” of which we saw: White Cockatoo, Violet-necked Lory, Red-flanked Lorikeet, Red-cheeked Parrot, Great-billed Parrot, Eclectus Parrot, Moluccan King-Parrot and Moluccan Hanging-Parrot. White Cockatoos were difficult to miss. Besides several Blue-and-white Kingfishers a few Common Paradise-Kingfishers were seen. At night Moluccan Owlet-Nightjar, Moluccan Boobook and Moluccan Scops-Owl were cheering up our nights. They were all recorded from Anu’s hut. At daytime we had Variable Goshawk, Moluccan Goshawk and Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk in the same area. Dusky Scrubfowl was encountered frequently in contrary to the Goliath Coucals which were restricted to the open ares.
In the adjacent forest Ivory-breasted Pittas were much more heard than seen and Nicobar Pigeons were flushed several times. Doves and pigeons cooperated well with the following notable species: Scarlet-breasted, Superb, Blue-capped and Gray-headed Fruit-Doves and also White-eyed, Cinnamon-bellied and Pied Imperial-Pigeon.

Guides: Anu, alias Demianus Bagoly. This is the only guide available on the island who can arrange everything so one can clean up Halmahera in this time span. This renders his guidance very useful although we had quite some problems with him. He knows his birds very well, speaks rather well English, but he’s very expensive (quite a rip-off), always tries to get more money out of you, arranges expensive food, transport and sleeping facilities with his own family, and proved to be lazy. Contact him at the President Hotel in Tobele, at Warga Abang street in Tobelo, or at Kusuri. We found him at the latter place with a lot of luck. There was also a young guy named Yunus, he speaks good English and should be able to do some guiding but we didn’t try him. Contact him at malegayunus@yahoo.com.

Foli

Scanning dead trees soon produced an obliging Purple Dollarbird. Recording and playback of a calling Sombre Kingfisher didn’t bring the bird close enough to see it. Blue-and-white Kingfishers cooperated better. We also heard 1 Rufous-tailed Bush-hen calling.

Guides: Anu, see above.

Galela

Sadly we missed the Moluccan Scrub-Fowl, which come the beach at night to lay their eggs in the sand. A lot of people were at the beach early morning to harvest the newly laid eggs. We do hope the local breeding program does work, as it seemed a rather unsustainable activity to us… On a small offshore island we found some Beach Kingfishers so easily that we even had some spare time for our only quick swimming break.

Guides: Anu, see above. Due to his (!) laziness we arrived way too late at the Galela beach and missed the night-active Moluccan Scrub-Fowl.

Dumoga Bone

In contrary to the Black-billed Kingfisher which we missed, a tiny Sulawesi Kingfisher was found eventually along a gully in the forest on the right side just after crossing the river. Stephan’s Dove and Maroon-chinned Fruit-Dove were seen only in DB. Dumoga is also on of the best spots for Azure-rumped Parrot and Pygmy Hanging-Parrot.

Guides: Icong, has poor knowledge of birds and is rather lazy in our opinion. The guidance not necessary as you can find the way yourself and our guide hardly found any good birds. Sometimes it was even annoying to have that guide. Contact for him, or another guide, at the PHPA office in Dulodua.

Tambun

We only heard a Maleo calling a few times. Since we were very eager to see this enigmatic bird, we decided to try our luck at another site: Muara Pussian.

Guides: Icong, see above. He arranged transport from Dumoga Bone to Tambun but showed up to late, so we arrived too late to see any Maleos, or maybe we were just incredibly unlucky that morning.

Muara Pusian

Since we missed the Maleo at Tambun we decided to come along with a local bird researcher to Muara Pussian to see the Maleos. Finally we not only had lovely views of a pair of Maleos but also a much appreciated Black-billed Kingfisher. At night we heard a Ochre-bellied Hawk-Owl calling closeby.

Guides: Antho Bengga, not a real guide but a Maleo researcher, he knows his birds good and was very friendly. We had to pay no fee, but gave him a small reward - a music cassette of Nirvana (!) and a free meal. As he is not a guide, he has no contact details, but one can mail him at antho_bengga@yahoo.co.id

Gunung Ambang

With species as Sulawesi Owl, Sulawesi Scops-Owl and Speckled Boobook, Ambang gave us some pleasant night birding, although we were hoping to have a look on the newly discovered Cinnabar Hawk-Owl. We saw or only Spot-tailed Goshawk just outside the forest. Lovely Red-eared Fruit-Doves showed themselves several times both at lower and higher parts. Pygmy Hanging-Parrots were scarce in the lower parts. From clearings in the forest Purple Needletail were picked out regularly.

Guides: Julius, speaks no English and has very poor knowledge of birds. He proved to be very friendly and helpful, but you don’t really need a guide. Contact him at his house in Singsingon.

Lore Lindu

The good-looking Purple-bearded Bee-eaters were seen in small numbers along the Anaso Road. Our only Yellow-and-green Lorikeets were seen along that same road. A party of three Heinrich’s Nightjars was roosting during day in a clearing along the lower Anaso Road. To see pictures of them click here. Around the clearings we were also able to recognise some raptors including Barred Honey-Buzzards. In fruiting trees Red-eared and Superb Fruit-Doves were found. We also had several Gray-headed Imperial-Pigeons along Anaso Road. Around Lake Tambun we saw our only Small Sparrowhawk of the trip.
In the Toro area we caught up with a calling Sulawesi Hawk-Cuckoo and had some more Purple Needletails.

Guides: Nurlin, basic knowledge of birds, speaks fluently English unlike all other Indonesians very friendly and quick! We hired him for the Toro area only (we did the rest ourselves) but he’ll also be pleased to guide you at the Anaso Road area. The guiding is not necessary but in our case we had only little time so we could use somebody to arrange everything asap. He arranged sleeping facilities for us in the house of the village chief of Toro. The most professional guide we met on this trip. Contact him at the Purnawa Raya Hotel or at talk2mine@yahoo.com.

Karaenta Forest

The main target bird was the Black-ringed White-eye, of which we saw a few birds after 2 hours searching. Other goodies included Piping Crow, Sulawesi Hornbill, etc...

Guides: none.

Ujung Pandang Fishponds

We found this place by coincidence and it produced good numbers of waders of which the most interesting were: 2 Greater sandplovers, 3 Far Eastern Curlews, 2 Terek Sandpipers, 1 Ruddy Turnstone, 1 Great Knot, several Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and 1 Ruff (exceptional?).

Guides: none.
