NOTE:

We had to spend 1 extra day at San Isidro which was meant for birding Loreto Road. A landslide between Quito and Baeza caused a total absence of any traffic. The last day at San Isidro produced only few new species whereas a second day for Loreto Road would defenitely have produced much more and better species.

VISITED SITES

Listed below are all birding sites we've visited during this trip. Summarized access information is given and the trails or places where we've done some birding are mentioned.

Huacamayos Ridge
We took an early bus to Coca/Tena and got of at the shrine on top of the pass, which is c. 7km from Cosanga and 28 from Baeza. On the right side there are some obvious antennas. There is a short trail going to these antennas, which immediately forks. The left one (so called Inca trail) goes down to the pipeline, but we didn't go that far though, and got most of the species along this trail.

San Isidro
Coming from Baeza, about 200 meters before the small village Cosanga a dirt road splits off on the right side. There is a small signpost to Cabañas San Isidro. The lodge itself lies 2-3 km further along this dirt road. Just a few hundred meters before arriving at the entrance gate of the Lodge there is the so called Log Trail starting on the right. We saw both Bicolored Antvireo and White-bellied Antpitta about halfway the first forest patch along this trail. One can do some decent birding on the grounds of the lodge itself as well but a 10 $ entrance fee is asked when not spending the night at the lodge. This private reserve holds some trails and some good feeders. A map and bird list available at request at the office. We birded the Antvireo and the Cock-of-the-Rock Trail. Along the latter we recorded (of course) some cock-of-the-rocks and one of our better birds for the trip: Peruvian Antpitta about 50 meters before the obvious shelter.

Loreto Road
From Tena we took an early bus to Coca and got of at the main junction (going to Quito and Coca) around KM 24. From there we birded our way along the road to Coca (right one). 2-3 km along that road there is a house with a corrugated roof. Although one can't see it from the road, right behind the house there is a trail going down. First it passes through some plantations, a small patch of good forest, it crosses a river and then some patches of good forest alternate with plantations. We followed the trail up to where the large river comes visible. Amazonian Umbrellabird was present close to the river. Plain-backed Antpitta, Black-billed Treehunter and Coppery-chested Jacamar were found in the better forest patches along the trail. When walking back along the road we had great views an Orange-breasted Falcon flying overhead 300 meters before the main junction .

Tena (Parque Amazonica)
We had a few hours spare time in the morning and decided to do some birding in the Parque Amazonica. It lies in the very city centre of Tena and is signposted decently. Not too fantastic birding but still we managed to see some species we never saw again during the rest of our trip.

Yuturi & Yarina
Both lodges can only be visited by official booked tours (see website). We chose Yuturi out of the Amazonian lodges, mainly because of the price tag. Afterwards we could highly recommend this lodge if you're not pressed for time since it takes almost a full day to get there (180 bird less kms along the Rio Napo starting from Coca). We did explicitly ask for Jaime to be our personal guide. We did not have to share him with other non birding visitors and always had a full day in the field. He speaks no English but really knows to find and identify the birds. Most of the time the mornings and evenings were spent birding varzea areas en route to the trails. The rest of the day we mainly birded the terra firma trails like the Limon and Manduro Trail. At least one morning should be used to bird the Rio Napo islands. We birded the so called Monkey Island (older vegetation) and a recent unnamed island (pioneer vegetation). Night birding was limited to the grounds and trails in the direct vicinity of the lodge. The last day was spent obligatory at the Yarina Lodge. Since the Yuturi canopy tower is broken down we opted to spend most of the time at Yarina on the canopy tower.

Tinalandia
We took a local bus from Santo Domingo to Alluriquín and got off about 4-5km before the village. On the right hand side there is a signposted access road up to the hotel. The hotel has some feeders worth checking. We found it far from straightforward to find out where to bird but we eventually found the trail going through the forested area at the end of the domain. Scale-throated Leaftosser, Esmeraldas Antbird and Choco Warblers were seen there.

Rio Palenque
The reserve is situated along the main road Santo Domingo - Quevedo at 47km marker about 1,5-2km past Patricia Pilar. We found the birding somewhat better than in Tinalandia. The forest patch is so small it is very obvious where to bird. We wandered along all the trails and spent some short time in the open areas (plantations).

Mindo
Along the road from Quito to Los Bancos a few kms just after Santa Rosa there is a well signposted road down to the pleasant village of Mindo. The Yellow House Trail offered good birding. The trail is signposted well and starts at the end of the village on the backside of the market square. Just pass the iron gate and pay a visit (and entrance fee) to the yellow house further along the road. There is a known lek for Club-winged Manakins in the Rio Nambillo area. We never reached it properly since we probably did not go far enough... One should follow road at the end of the village to the Mindo Gardens. We did some birding along the road and followed a few trails but never really far. We also paid an evening visit to the feeders Hotel Los Colibries. The last day was spent looking for Giant Antpitta at a site called Mindo Loma. although we saw some nice birds in this area, it was not a great success since we missed the antpitta (and even saw it later on in Bellavista!). Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager and a good variety of hummingbirds were seen at the feeders. Because we had no idea where the spot for the antpitta was we hired a guide for half a day and spent the rest of the day on our own in the same area.

Tandayapa
There seem to be absolutely no signposts! Along the new road Quito - Los Bancos there is a turnoff to the right about 2km past the village of Nanegalito. A few hundred meters past the Tandayapa village (keep right) there is a dirt road on the right side. It is on the opposite side of a trout farm. There are no public busses serving this road, so you should hire a taxi at Nanegalito (or at Mindo like we did). The Tandayape area is said to be not accessible on a day visit base, so we opted to spend 1 night at the expensive lodge. The feeders near the lodge hold good numbers of hummingbirds. We mainly birded the lower trail system like the Potoo, Antpitta and Hide Trail. At the end of the latter there is a nice bird hide. The light installation (actually the moths coming to the light) attracts some nice bird species. They all can be seen on the trails as well but for making photographs this is a great opportunity indeed.

Bellavista
The Bellavista Lodge is situated 6km further along the same road as the Tandayapa Lodge. We asked to have a taxi arranged from Tandayapa to Bellavista. A map covering the area is available at the office. We spent a lot of time searching for the enigmatic Tanager Finch (unsuccessful unfortunately) and hence we mainly birded the area near the pass. The H and F Trails offered good birding with some nice flocks and the dirt road leading to the Research Station produced an every day present Giant Antpitta and a White-faced Nunbird hanging around near the start of the H Trail. In search of Beautiful Jay we also spent a full day birding along the main road between the Bellavista and the Tandayapa lodge. Halfway (i.e. circa 3km) should be the best area... 1,5-2km from the Bellavista Lodge along that road is the house of Tony & Barbara with a garden that is overloaded with heavily visited feeders.

Papallacta
Papallacta is a small roadside village situated along the road between Quito and Baeza, 58km from Quito. We birded our first day very near the village. There is a trail on the right just past the bridge near Hotel Don Wilson where the pipelines cross the road. In the first meters it is overgrown but it soon comes out on a more open area. Rufous Antpitta and Sword-billed Hummingbird were present. The road to the thermal baths is well signposted. It is just before the same bridge Others had some nice birds there but we only found Sword-billed Hummingbird (common). Andean Gulls and Andean Teals were present on the pond along that road. Along the Papallacta Lake (2-3 km from the village in the direction of the pass) there is a dirt road which offered us moderate birding. The pass itself is of course the at highest point and there is a shrine for the "Virgin del Paramo". There is also a large sign indicating the Quito area. Coming from Papallacta village just before this sign a dirt roads goes out to the right and forks immediately. The left road produced some nice birds amongst which Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant. The right road leads to the antennas (2km). Along this road one should find most of the paramo species and seedsnipes. 1km to the East sided from the pass There is a patch of polylepis forest featuring some trails through and around. Behind this forest there is a nice paramo lake.

Guango
The Guango lodge is situated along the main road from Papallacta to Baeza. On the right side here is large sign "Guango". One morning was definitely too short to do justice to this site but I ran out of time. Mountain Avocetbill was present on the flowers right behind the lodge while good numbers of other hummingbirds were attracted by the feeders (5$ entrance). There are some trails which probably can offer some other good species...

It was a huge antpitta with large dark bill, tawny underparts with bold blackish scalloping, unstreaked gray-brown upperparts (crown more gray), obvious black malar stripes with a white unmarked throat, weakly spotted ear coverts, light lores and buffy postocular patches. Allthough it is not on the area bird list and the presence of recent claims of Giant Antpitta in the area, there seems no reason for us why it couldn't occur there. Photographed.
